Tin Can Bay P-10 School is now part of the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation. Lindsay Fewster (the 'Plant Man' from Cooloola Cove) our garden specialist, Irene Manwaring from the CWA our kitchen specialist and myself travelled to the Bulimba State School at South Brisbane in March for a two-day intensive training course. We learnt how the program uses produce from the school garden to teach students about nutrition and healthy eating by being involved in the growing of vegetables and using them in delicious recipes that they cook themselves.
Term 2 will see the expansion of our kitchen garden and outdoor learning area at the school with an information session for anyone who is interested on Monday 12 May at 2.30pm at the school, followed by a working bee on Saturday 24 May from 9am-2pm with morning tea and lunch provided. We are hoping that parents, grandparents and members of the community will be involved in the following ways:
- Ongoing upkeep of the garden on a regular basis;
- Garden sessions with the students on a weekly basis commencing in Term 3;
- Kitchen sessions using the produce from the garden on a weekly basis commencing in Term 3;
- Donating items for the garden or kitchen;
- Creating artistic items for the garden such as a mural and garden art.
Students can be involved at this early stage in either of two ways:
Colouring-in the attached sheet of labels - the winning entries will be laminated and used in the garden for students to identify what is being grown or
Creating a design for a mural for the outdoor learning area - the winning entry will be used in the outdoor classroom area and will welcome everyone to our kitchen garden.
Winners will be announced during school parade and in the Bay Bulletin and will receive great prizes.
